Coach Tom Cable has downplayed the state of saying that he thought both players would be “all right” for Sunday. That’s what the coach is supposed to say, but it makes you wonder. If there were no concerns, they would be entered as is probable, there must be a reason why he chose to question.
If Heyward-Bey, Murphy had to be this week, we can highlight the lack of serious Raiders depth at the wide receiver position. Figure with Yamon no longer on the team, Johnny Lee Higgins is the only other Raiders receiver wide with a reception this season.
The Raiders have young talent in Jacoby Ford and Nick Miller, but did not see a lot of time or in any plays in the passing game this season.
Jacoby Ford was an impressive display to return to kick against the Arizona Cardinals last week. If he can translate that success of the passing game, it would help to solidify the depth at the wide receiver position. Chaz Schilens will also return a great help, but who knows when it will.
Schilens missed eight games last season and the Raiders have been all but silent on his status this year. Vittorio Tafur the San Francisco Chronicle has predicted he will be backs in Week 7 and leave the bench. But as we all know, the chances of accurately predicting the media that the Raiders are almost zero.
Although both Heyward-Bey and Murphy were able to play Sunday, they obviously will not be 100 percent. The Oakland Raiders are thin at wide receiver position, even with Heyward-Bey and healthy Murphy.
The Raiders go into their home game the second half of the season with two receivers from playing injured, and without a strong support cast to take over.
Raiders fans understand how injuries can be frustrating for the team. The Raiders have seen a number of players suffer injuries that took out chunks of time playing bass.
While Heyward-Bey and Murphy may be able to play Sunday, it might not be the best ideas, do not hesitate Texans receiver Andre Johnson. Johnson played last weekend with an injured ankle and aggravated the injury.
Before the start of the season, I wrote an article calling for the signing of TJ Houshmandzadeh to address the lack of experience and depth at that position. It was reported that the Raiders were among the first choices Houshmandzadeh, but for some reason it did not happen.
Most discussions on the Raiders offense went on the offensive line. Beside them, recipients are the greatest concern to Raiders cornerback position as the only others are not nearly as big a concern.
There are more good prospects in the free agent market and elsewhere Vincent Jackson, who the Raiders will not be able to land; there were no rumors about a lot of receivers on the trading block.
However, if Al Davis wants to really improve the situation, he will. I mean, after all, nobody thought that Richard Seymour has been on the trading block before coming to the Raiders.
Bruce Gradkowski has done a fair job with the Raiders offense against the Cardinals last weekend. It was not great, but it moved the ball better than the Raiders had moved throughout the season. If the Raiders want this offense to really look, they desperately need to add more depth to the wide receiver position.
