Among the neighboring Indiana, Michigan has only higher unemployment, at 13.1 percent. Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio all have unemployment rates that are slightly below Indiana.
In previous months, the Governor Mitch Daniels of Indiana boasted rates relatively low unemployment as one of many indications that the state weathered the financial crisis better than its neighbors.
In August 2009, state figures showed that the unemployment rate in Indiana was lower than all its neighbors.
While the unemployment rate in Indiana was virtually unchanged year on year, down 0.1 percent, all its neighbors have decreased markedly during the same period.
Indiana added 3,000 jobs in the private sector in August, officials said, boosting the year to date additions to private sector jobs of 54,700 jobs.
“Indiana is the addition of private sector jobs for three and a half times faster than the United States as a whole,” said Indiana Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Mark Everson, in a news release. “Combined with Unemployment claims drop again to levels not seen since 2007, we expect a decline in our unemployment rate in the months to come. ”
Officials said job growth in professional and business services and private education and health has stimulated private sector growth.
There were large declines in manufacturing and the government in August.
The unemployment rate in Indiana is higher than the national average of 9.6 percent.
