It looks like the Death Eaters have struck again. The result? The touted 3D conversion for the November 19 release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 has been nixed. Yup, it seems that the anti-conversion pessimists were right to poo-poo Harry's first foray into the gimmick that's once again taken the world by storm. While the standard IMAX version will remain intact, it seems that, not Voldemort, but rather, time was the biggest enemy for the 3D release of Deathly Hallows 1. However, the studio still remains committed to releasing a 3D conversion of the Potter finale's second part which will hit on July 15, 2011. There is no word on whether or not a 3D conversion of Hallows 1 will eventually make its way to theaters to coincide with that release. Regardless, a certain segment of Potter fans will be disappointed, while others will more likely be relieved that their favorite wizard did not get the "Clash of the Titans" treatment.
According to Warner Bros:
"Despite everyone's best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality,'' the studio said. "We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey."
And as director David Yates and producer David Heyman echoed in a joint statement:
"For 10 years, we have worked alongside [Warner Bros. President] Alan Horn and the studio, whose priority has always been to preserve the integrity of Jo Rowling's books as we have adapted them to the screen, and this decision reflects that commitment."
While I seriously doubt this news will deter most fans, especially after this spectacular trailer, I have to ask: Somewhere deep inside your subconscious, near the part that thinks Ghost Rider 2 will rule the world, aren't you even slightly disappointed? Me? I still have a headache from Clash of the Titans, so I'm in no condition to respond.
