Max Hall Could Replace Derek Anderson as Cardinals' Starting QB

Matt Leinart had his shot. So did Derek Anderson. Now it appears Max Hall will get a chance to replace retired Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner.

Hall, an undrafted rookie out of BYU who signed with Arizona during the offseason, replaced Anderson in San Diego's 41-10 drubbing of San Diego on Sunday. And early indications point towards Hall possibly getting the call again in Week 5 when Arizona hosts New Orleans.

Anderson started against the Chargers, but was pulled after throwing a pick-six late in the first half to put the Cardinals behind 28-7. Hall was far from lights-out in relief (8 of 14 for 82 yards) and yet his numbers were an upgrade over Anderson's (7 of 14 for 64 yards and two touchdowns). That was enough to lead Darren Urban of azcardinals.com -- the team's official website -- to speculate that the starting job may not be Hall's to lose.

"I don't know if there is ever a good time to go to a rookie quarterback," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said after Sunday's loss, according to the team's website. "That's something we have to look at now. I'm not saying that's the direction we will go in. We will look at it this week."

Hall didn't even secure his spot on Arizona's active roster until the team released Leinart, one-time heir apparent to Warner in the desert. But once Leinart was handed his walking papers, Hall ascended to the backup job behind Anderson. And with Anderson riding a mediocre 59.5 QB rating through four games, Hall could be moving up again.

"All I can do is prepare every day in case it does happen and I play," Hall said, according to Urban. "So right now, that's what I will do."

Prior to Sunday's relief appearance, Hall had thrown just two NFL regular-season passes -- both in a Week 2 loss at Atlanta -- and completed one. He played in the Cardinals' final three preseason games, hitting on 16 of 27 pass attempts.

Still, it's nearly unfathomable to think that the two-time defending NFC West champion Cardinals could be in this much duress at QB without Warner, the man responsible for a Super Bowl trip two season ago. Yet, despite all the turmoil at the sport's most important position, Arizona's 2-2 and tied for first in a watered-down division, with preseason favorite San Francisco wallowing at 0-4.

But is Hall the guy to help get the Cardinals back to the playoffs? We'll have to wait and see.

"It would be easy to make an emotional decision based on how I feel, which is pretty upset at the way we played," Whisenhunt said, azcardinals.com reported. "I don't want to do that."
