Man United held; Van der Vaart brace earns Spurs win

Sunderland had the better of the chances against Manchester United  at the Stadium of Light in the English Premier League on Saturday, but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against the 2009 champions.

The Black Cats dominated the first half with Bolo Zenden going closest when his shot hit Edwin van der Sar's post.

Dimitar Berbatov replaced Michael Owen in the second half but United were unable to force a breakthrough.

It was Sunderland who looked more likely to score and Darren Bent should have put the Black Cats ahead in the second half but he contrived to fire wide from close range.

The draw leaves United in second place, but Arsenal can leapfrog them if they beat Chelsea in Sunday's London derby at Stamford Bridge.

It was another eventful day for Rafael Van der Vaart and Tottenham Hotspur who came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

The Dutchman scored twice after Marc Albrighton had given Gerard Houllier's men the lead after 16 minutes.

Van der Vaart -- who missed a penalty and was sent off in Spurs' midweek Champions League fixture against FC Twente -- headed his first goal in first half injury time before smashing home the winner 15 minutes from time, handing Houllier his first defeat since he took charge at Villa Park.

Spurs move up to fifth in the table ahead of Villa who now lie in eighth place.

Everton secured their first league win of the season away to Birmingham City.

An own-goal from Birmingham defender Roger Johnson gave the Toffees the lead ten minutes into the second half. Tim Cahill sealed three points with a header three minutes into injury time. The win lifts Everton off the bottom of the table and up to 17th place.

Fulham and West Ham shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Upton Park.

Clint Dempsey, who famously scored against England at the 2010 World Cup when England goalkeeper Robert Green fumbled his shot, beat Green again -- this time chipping the ball over him from 12 yards -- after 33 minutes.

But West Ham equalized through a Frederic Piquionne header early in the second half.

Green denied Fulham all three points when he saved brilliantly from Dickson Etuhu, but with Everton winning West Ham slip back to the bottom of the table.

Stoke City moved up to seventh place after a win over Blackburn Rovers at the Britannia Stadium.

John Walters fired his first Premier League goal in after 48 minutes. Despite pushing for an equalizer, Sam Allardyce's men never really threatened Thomas Sorensen's goal.

West Brom and Bolton Wanderers drew 1-1 at The Hawthorns.

A dull first half contest was enlivened in the second by a Johan Elmander strike -- his fourth this season -- giving Bolton the lead after 64 minutes. But a James Morrison header cancelled out Bolton's advantage and secured a draw for the Baggies and keeps them in touch with the league leaders in sixth spot.

In the early kick-off, Wigan secured their first home win of the season with a 2-0 win over Wolves.

Wolves' midfielder Karl Henry was shown a straight red card by the referee after just 10 minutes for a reckless challenge on Wigan's Jordi Gomez.

But despite the numerical advantage, Wigan had to wait until the 65th minute for the breakthrough when Gomez converted a free kick from the edge of the box.

Hugo Rodallega made certain of the three points when he latched onto a through-ball from Charles N'Zogbia, consigning Wolves to their fourth straight loss in the league.

Wolves remain in the bottom three while Wigan move up to 14th.
