Duke Student Powerpoint

Duke University student Karen Owen is making headlines this week after her PowerPoint presentation featuring detailed encounters of 13 men she had sex with became a viral hit online.

The presentation is comprehensive and elaborate. It’s called the Duke University F—K List and the the subject is: “An education beyond the classroom: excelling in the realm of horizontal academics.”

The full presentation includes photos for all 13 men, the pros and cons of their encounter, Karen’s most memorable moment of their hookup and a score from 1-10 of their performance.

After reading the report, some of the men will be drowning in their egos while others will be burying their head in shame. Owens has since apologized for the report, insisting she never meant for any of the men to get hurt.

I can’t exactly figure out how someone could create such a detailed document like Karen’s list without any intention of hurting anyone but I guess that’s irrelevant at this point in time.

What I also can’t understand is the humiliation and embarrassment Karen’s parents (and grandparents) must feel after reading such a report (because realistically, at this point, they’ve probably read it).

Imagine reading a detailed summary of your daughter’s (or sister’s or cousin’s or neice’s…) sexual encounters with 13 men over the course of about a year.

How would you feel if your daughter was not only proud of sleeping with so many men but actually went as far as to create a detailed report of her endeavors?Dr. Kerner noted that a double standard may be at play.

Male college students have a long history of sharing intimate details with each other about their sexual exploits, he said. In this case, a woman was the source of the information, which ended up circulating across the Internet.

What lesson can be learned from Owen’s use of real names and intimate details in her “thesis,” and then emailing it to a few friends?

Simple, says Dr. Kerner. “Don’t put anything up on the web unless you intend for it to be distributed, perhaps on a massive scale.” She showed her friends and then it ended up available to all at the university and then the globe through her profile from social networking sites.
She has since expressed great regret at her actions saying “I regret it with all my heart,”.
